Lapis lazuli is one of the oldest gemstones in human history, first mined over 7,000 years ago in the Sar-e-Sang mines of Badakhshan, Afghanistan. From there, it spread through ancient trade routes to civilizations like Mesopotamia, the Indus Valley, and Egypt, where it became highly valued. Some of the earliest known lapis artifacts, including beads from the Indus Valley, date back to around 7570 BCE.
